A brief listing of lifestyle changes that may help relieve insomnia.

Studies have shown that up to one in three American citizens suffer from some level of insomnia ranging from mild to very severe. That is a rather astonishing number of people not getting restful or enough sleep. If you are one of these many people suffering from insomnia you should talk to your doctor about proper medication and lifestyle changes that may help. I have provided a list below of certain things you should consider if you suffer from insomnia and also ask your doctor if these are suitable additions to your treatment plan.

If you drink or eat foods containing caffeine, I strongly suggest you cut back or preferably cut it out of your diet completely. Even if all you ingest is just a cup of coffee in the morning, get rid of it. It can still be affecting how you sleep at night.

Eat slowly. Eating too fast can cause indigestion. Also, avoid foods that cause you indigestion. Indigestion can disrupt your sleep as well.

Eat a light dinner and save large meals for breakfast or lunch. Digestion is the most taxing process in the body, and if it doesn’t keep you up, your sleep won’t be very restful. If you eat larger meals earlier in the day you digest while you are still awake leaving less for the body to catch up on while you sleep making it a more restful experience.

If you must have a late night snack, make it a light one at least an hour before bed. This will help give your body more time to digest before you lay down to get some rest.

This one is never the most fun, but you should not drink alcohol at least an hour before going to bed for the night. Making your liver work hard can cause you to not get a restful sleep and may also keep you to uncomfortable to sleep. In fact it is better not to drink anything at least an hour before bed. This can help eliminate night time trips to the bathroom that may be keeping you up at night.

I hope that you and your doctor can find a manageable treatment that will work for you and that a couple of my suggestions help make this lifestyle transition easier for you. With insomnia plaguing so many people I am so very glad to help any and all find a good nights sleep. We all need it. Sleep well and enjoy your rest.
