I have been in the restaurant business for ten years now and I have learned that being the best waitress you can be will only benefit you more.  The first thing you should do as soon as possible is bring out water and menus as soon as possible, it’s just like when you go out to eat; nobody likes to sit there very long waiting on a menu. Greet them with a big smile and no matter how your day is going always be friendly, remember you depend on those tips and if you want good tips you have to work for them.

Next, keep an eye on your table and whenever you see your customer stop reading and or put down their menu, go to the table and get their order as quickly as you can. When their food is ready; do not let it sit in the window because people don’t like to see their food sitting there getting cold, do you? After they have their food, leave them alone for about five minutes then go over and ask them if everything tastes okay and if they need refills on drinks.  Leave them alone the rest of the time unless they need drink refills or if you notice them looking at you like they need something. Once they are done eating, make sure you take the dirty plates off their table.

Never let your customers sit there after they are done and wait for their check. Take it to them and say; I’m just going to lay your check here but take your time and thank you very much for visiting us today and come back and see us soon. If you follow these steps, most people will tip you fairly and will return.
