Tips About How to Stop Gossiping and Staying Negative Things

Do you find that you say lots of negative things, or find yourself gossiping, even though it makes you feel awful? There is a way to make it stop - and you can do it!

Keep a notepad in your bag or desk. Every time you want to say something negative or start to gossip, write whatever you wanted to say down, then rip up the paper and throw it out. Make sure to rip the paper up well so no one can put it back together and read it.

Take what you wanted to say and spin it in a positive way. You can change something like, "Jane is so annoying!" and change it to, "Jane and I see differently, but she and I have different points of view." It's not as satisfying as complaining about Jane, but you get your point across in a mature manner.

When you're alone, whisper what you wanted to say. When no one can hear you, it's okay to say it. Just keep it to yourself - once you share your negative thought with someone else, you never know what will happen.

If someone else starts saying negative things and wants you to join in, either change the subject or leave the room. Just because someone else starts something does not mean that you have to join in.

When you want to say something negative, take your mind off of it. Talk to someone about something else, start a project, or turn up the radio and sing along.

If you start to say something negative, stop yourself and ask yourself, "How would I feel if someone said this about me or my work?" If you wouldn’t want someone to say it about you, don’t say it about someone else.
