Here are tips to help you make the right choices in buying lipstick.

Of all the cosmetic products, I think lipstick is the only makeup that women can't live without. Even without eye shadows and blush, a lipstick alone can put a beautiful glow in our face. We can change our look instantly with just a change in the color of our lipstick. We can look natural or dramatic just by changing colors. But putting only eye shadows and blush without lipstick, our makeup would obviously look undone.

What are the different kinds of lipsticks? A lipstick comes in several forms:

1. Cream lipstick has a semi-opaque to opaque, satiny texture, with minimal shine.

2. Matte lipstick does not make the lips look shiny. It has deep, opaque colors and has a natural look. It can also make the lips look thinner.

3. Sheer lipstick is also called satin lipstick. It has a hint of color with maximum shine, so your lips look naturally wet and shiny. It is pale, almost transparent, somewhere between gloss and lipstick. It is not long-lasting and offers little coverage.

4. Shimmer lipstick has an opalescent finish and is a good choice for evening. It looks great under artificial light. It can make your lips appear fuller.

5. Lip stain provides a natural look. It is long-lasting and comes mostly in a matte finish. It is perfect when you are in a hurry and you just have a few minutes to do your makeup. This is for low maintenance girls like me who want to look good without spending too much time in doing makeup.

6. Lip pencil is a crayon-like pencil to shape, line, and fill in the lips. It should match and blend with your lipstick color. It keeps lipstick within the outlines of your lips and prevents lip color from bleeding. It also defines the outlines of your mouth and helps make the color last. Using a lip pencil makes it easy to correct the shape of unbalanced lips than using lipstick only. I have thin lips so I use lip pencil to outline my lips just a little outside my natural lipline to make it appear fuller.

7. Lip gloss gives lips a mild luster and sometimes subtle color. It is a shiny balm that can be clear or translucent in color.

How do you choose a lipstick color? The most flattering shades resemble the color of your natural lips, like nudes, roses, berries, and soft browns. Lipstick is something you must try on, and I mean on your lips! Some colors look different on the lips than they do in the tube. Plus, your unique lip tone will affect color as well. That's why one lipstick shade won't look the same on two women. Test the color in natural light. Store lighting are usually designed to make everything look beautiful.

Your lipstick color should complement your outfit. Natural colors are more suitable for casual occasions. For formal events, deeper colors like dark reds would make you look more dazzling. For office wear, I suggest you avoid bright colors. These can be distracting. Neutrals in the family of pinks and berries are a good choice. Red may be powerful but it can also make you seem unapproachable. Neutral colors in the family of brown can sometimes make you look dreary and tired. That's the last thing you want in the workplace. Since you'll be in the office all day, it's important that your lipstick moisturizes your lips and its color won't fade away. After all, we won't always have time for touchups!

I'm also the kind of person who likes reapplying my lipstick without a mirror. Sheer, shimmer or glossy lipsticks are more foolproof for me than mattes or creams, which can make mistakes look more obvious.

It is also good to choose lipsticks that contain SPF. The skin on our lips is thinner and can burn easily, so it's important that we protect our lips from sun damage.
