Interested in starting a Disney collectibles (Disneyana) collection? Find out basic information regarding collectible items and how to get started.

Before starting, decide what it is you wish to collect. Are you looking to collect items from a particular character, medium (art, music, film), or Disney Theme Park? After picking one, break it down further into sub-categories (ex. - film cells, sketches, lithographs) until you are satisfied you have found a Disney collectible area to focus on.

Next, pick a period. Are you interested in vintage or contemporary Disneyana? For newbie collectors, vintage Disneyana will be all items before the mid-1960’s and contemporary items are anything after this period. If it doesn’t matter about the time frame, just know if seeking an item what these dates refer to, as they may be given in an item’s description.

Don’t start yet! Set a budget. Plan a budget and use it. Collectibles come and go. Unless original film cells, animation drawings or other one-of-a-kind type of Disney collectible items, they will re-appear again. If looking to purchase big ticket items, set money aside in a separate account used only for Disneyana purchases.

Before you buy anything, price it right. Buy a book. In order not to get “taken”, purchase a Disneyana collectibles book to help authenticate items. When looking at a potential purchase, use the book to help authenticate the item’s time period, manufacturer and estimated value.

One your item(s) arrives home, be sure to keep your Disney collectibles preserved. Make sure they are free from dust, sunlight, moisture or abrasive surfaces. If collecting breakable items or metal toys, wrap in bubble wrap to prevent chipping and/or rusting.
