Although it would be easiest to dump excess pesticides in the street or down the drain, we know better than that, right? Here is how to discard pesticides safely and why.

Things You'll Need: Excess Pesticides and a Phone.

People are busy and time is limited, however we can't pour pesticides down the drain, toilet, sewer, or street drain.  If pesticides are poured into the street, they go through the storm drains which feed into streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes.  This would harm fish, plants, and other living things.  And when they're poured down the drain, toilets or sewer, they could interfere with hte operation of treatment systems.  Many systems aren't equipped to remove all pesticide residues.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the best way to dispose of small amounts of excess pesticides is to use them, apply them, or donate them to a neighbor or church to use.

If you are unable to use them or donate them, most municipalities can advise you on how to discard pesticides.  Many even have household hazardous waste collection programs.  You can find more information on hazardous waste programs by contacting your local government agency.  You can also call 1-800-253-2687 to find information and sites for recycling and disposing of hazardous household waste.

*  Check with local authorities before discarding any hazardous household chemicals.

*  Always read the product label for disposal information.

*  Be aware that state or local laws may be more strict than the federal requirements listed on the label.

*  Help protect our Earth and everyone/thing that lives on it.  Be sure to follow the packaging lables or make a call to find out how to discard your household pesticides.  Do your part and go Green!
