How to Improve your Life, by Making Changes in your Home

Oct 21st, 2008 by Brenda Nelson

When a person whats to improve their mental health,or other aspects of their life, they must look at what they are surrounding themselves with.

The first thing a person must do, if they want to improve themselves, is to get rid of everthing that is holding them down.  Get rid of anything negative in your home.  This can be simple sarcastic posters, coffeee mugs, or fridge magnets.  Shirts with mean sayings on them, anything of that sort.  I see these types of items for sale in stores, and often see people laughing at them or buying them, some for themselves others for gifts.  If you have any of these types of items in your home, get rid of them.  A good example of such an item is a coffee mug (for example) that says "This day is a total waste of makeup".   Look around and read everything in your home because you may not even be aware of how much negativity is surrounding you.

Replace those things with either neutral items or, bettter yet, happy items.  Find a coffee mug with a picture of flowers on it, or a possitive saying such as "Today is the start of a great day".  Oddly enough these items may be harder to find than the negative or sarcastic ones.

Think about the music you listen to.  Is it possitive or negative, do the lyrics talk about defeating yourself or building yourself up.  Some songs sing too much about heart ache and hard times.  These songs are negative and eat chunks of your mental state of mind bit by bit.  Find music that is upbeat and positive.  Listening to a variety of types of music is always beneficial too.  What I mean by this is that if a person normally only listens to Country music, for example, they should also try to listen to a bit of rock, afro-beat, or even classical.  Listening to different types of music can actually increase a persons intelligence because of exposure to different rhythm patterns than they are conditioned too.

Introduce living things into your home.  A plant is a great way to improve a living space.  If you are not a natural green thumb, make sure you pick a relatively easy plant to care for.  If you think you can handle a pet, then consider getting one.

Get more excercise.  When you work out, your body produces more positive chemicals, this is why some people with depression often struggle to get better.  They have no energy to go for a walk, but that is exactly what they need most.  Owning a dog would force a person to get out and walk.  Walks in the park are especialy beneficial to improving ones state of mind.

Walk away from negative people.  If somebody is feeling sorry for themself out of a desire to get your pity, walk away from them.   These people are in a pit and trying to draw you in as well.  They are not the key to your well being and when you give them attention for their attitude you encourage them to feel this way.  Of course this does not apply to a person who is depressed over a sudden situation (like a death) I am refering here to people who are always negative.

Do not find fun in other peoples misfortune, do not insult others.  What you put out, will come back to you, so find good in things rather than wrong.

Remind yourself how lucky you are to be alive, and keep thinking good things, eventually it comes naturally.
