Creating Your Website #1: Picking and Checking the Idea of Your Website

I have been creating various websites for almost 4 years and WEB design for about 1 year and now I want to share some tips with you. I am not a professional, but I have collected lots of good advices how to avoid mistakes when creating a site. This article gives you some advices, how to choose a good idea for your website and how to check it, because we all know - everything starts from good idea.

Part #1: Picking And Checking Your Idea:

If you want to start your own site you should already have cool (of course you think it's cool!) idea or even some of them (for example - I am always full of ideas :) And it is even better - you can choose the best idea and "start the work". But stop rushing - picking an Idea is also a hard work and it should be done ideally!

Step 1: The best way to check is it a really good idea or just a one-day's soap bubble in your head is waiting. Do not start making your website as soon as you have the idea. If it is unique, you should wait some days thinking about it, improve it in your mind and think up some good facilities for that site. Write them on some sheet of paper to remember easily. After some time (lets say 5 days) check these ideas and cross out the most unimportant. Then do it again and again until you have some of them (the most important, of course) left and ready to realize. This step is essential, because we allways start with a simple web page doing the main functions of our idea and after some time it suddenly grows up to some ultra-giga-uber-cool site with lots of unnecessary functions and it loses it's main point :).

Step 2: If you still feel that it is a good idea - it is time to use one of the best ideas' test - your friends. The main rule is one - they must be not somehow connected with WEB business or websites' creators/designers. These people must be simple "everyday normal guys" - internet users who will visit your site, same as hundreds/thousands/millions other your webpage future visitors. Choose right people who can objectively tell their opinion about your idea and tell them about your plans. Mention them some main advantages of your project which they would get. Tell them about your vision of the site. And always remember: tell your true vision as it will be and do not kiss up with them. Do not say things you will not be able to realize! If your friends (or, lets say, 80% of them - from maybe 5 or more people) are interested in your project and, what is really good, they can give you some tips on improvements, your idea is perfect!

Step 3: After checking your idea's strength you will need to make last preparations before starting your project works. If you can answer to all these questions "Yes" then you have enough motivation to start working on it!

Can you do coding good yourself or have you enough money to hire the designer and coder?
Do you always finish your projects? Will you have enough motivation to finish this one? (Be honest with yourself!).
Do you have budget which is needed for your project and it's advertising?
