Boot throwing incident on Union Home Minister of India, Mr. P Chidambaram, by a Journalist ahead of general elections in India.

The boot throwing incident on former US president George W Bush seems to have set a bad precedent among the media all over the world with more & more journalists choosing it as a way to register their protest.

The latest being, one such incident involving the Union Home Minister of India Mr. P. Chidambaram, who was briefing the press ahead of general elections in the country. (India goes to polls on April 16th, 2009) ... A journalist by name Jarnail Singh, working for the largest circulated, Dainik daily has thrown his boot on the minister in protest against the ruling Congress party allocating party tickets to those involved in violence against sikh community after the assasination of fomer prime minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi in mid 80's.

Mr. Chidambaram was addressing a live press conference yesterday, which was being beamed live by satellite channels all over the world when the irate journalist resorted to boot throwing incident. The scribe was asking a question about action being taken against one of the culprits, Mr. Jagadish Tytler, a sitting MP from the ruling Congress party, who is believed to have engineered violence against sikhs, after the popular, former prime minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi was assasinated in the mid 80's.  Widespread violence and arson took place against innocent sikhs after the killing of Mrs.Gandhi by her bodyguards, who belong to sikh community.

The journalist himself belongs to sikh community and was said to be a victim of the sikh massacre by irate mob that set fire to sikh dwellings and property in a highly charged atmosphere that was interspersed with political vendetta and camaraderie.. The home minister refused to answer the scribe's question as he opposed, turning the press meet into a political platform. He was briefing the press on the security situation in the country ahead of general elections.

The incident though deplorable, definitely brought to light the anger among the sikh community and could easily change the equations in the ongoing politcal process.

However, the minister having an affable and clean public image, pardoned the journalist and ordered his security personnel to set him free.

The atricle written by teflon09 is amazing and brought the sensational thing to light. The world is shocked quite often because of such incidents taking place. I hope that such incidents will not be repeated in future and hope journalists will observe restraint in press conferences.
