HERE'S HOW TO MAKE A HOODED CLOAK.

By Casey Carlton

It's easy to make a hooded cloak. Depending on the size of the lightweight material or blanket, you can make
a short hooded cloak or long hooded cloak for protection. A good width is 60 inches and at least 60 inches long. Either way, the blanket or material can be used for two purposes: one, as a hooded cloak, and two, as a blanket for sleeping. It can handily be folded up and tucked in a knapsack. This technique can also be used for two people using a large piece of material to make a double hooded cloak.

Things You'll Need:

  • short piece material or
  • long piece material
  • pin or other to secure

Step1

To make the hooded cloak, hold the blanket/material up and fold in half the long way. Keep your finger in that middle fold.

Step2

Now open it up and place the middle fold on top of your head, letting it drape over your shoulders evenly, much like a tent.

Step3

Pull it forward a couple inches over your forehead to make a nice
overhang and to help ward off rain or too much sunshine. At this point it falls straight off your head and may be awkward and heavy.

Step4

So that you can move your shoulders comfortably, pinch a bit of the material on the back of each shoulder and pull it forward to make a 4 or 5 inch "shelf" on top of your shoulders.

Step5

In the front, pull the edges of the "shelf" together and overlap.

Step6

Pin through all the overlapped layers to secure the hooded cloak.

Step7

If there is nothing available to secure the cloak, then hold the front together tightly with your hands, grabbing all the layers of the "shelf" and hood.

Tips

  • You can also wear this style with the hood down and it will keep your neck warm. It will look like a cowl neckline.
  • When you are finished with the hooded cloak, just fold it up and store it away for another day.
  • If you are using lightweight material, you may want to fold the top back a couple of inches so that when you pin it, it will be more stable.
  • If it is too long and drags the ground, just tie the ends in a knot to shorten them.
  • A longer blanket may drag the ground and a smaller blanket should clear the ground depending on if it's an adult or child.
  • If it is too long, it may drag the ground and trip you.
  • If you make the hood too large, it may fall around your face and make you trip since you won't be able to see anything.
