There are three main varieties of tea - green, black, and oolong. The difference between the teas is in their processing. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols.

According to the book "Green Tea: The Natural Secret for a Healthier Life" written by Nadine Taylor, green tea has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years.  Green tea has been extensively studied in people, animals, and laboratory experiments.  In 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of a study showing that drinking green tea reduces the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese people by nearly 60%.  According to a study conducted by University of Purdue a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Another study indicates that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels and improves the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Epidemiological studies indicate that the antioxidant properties of green tea may help prevent atherosclerosis, particularly coronary artery disease.  Several clinical studies have shown that green tea helps protect against cancer. Cancer rates tend to be low in countries such as Japan where more people drink green tea. Green tea is also found to be helpful in the diseases like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Diabetes, and Liver disease. Clinical studies indicate that green tea extract may boost metabolism and help burn fat and thus helping in lose weight.

People who have heart problems, kidney disorders, stomach ulcers, and psychological disorders such as anxiety should not consume green tea.  Pregnant and breast-feeding women should also avoid green tea.
