Choosing a nail polish color that is right for you on any given occasion can be overwhelming. The color in the bottle can be very pretty, but once you get it on your nails, it may clash with your skin tone or your outfit. How can you choose the right nail polish color?

There is an enormous variety in the colors of nail polish. Choosing which one is right for you on any given occasion can be overwhelming. The color in the bottle can be very pretty, but once you get it on your nails, it may clash with your skin tone or your outfit. How can you choose a nail polish color that is right for you?

Consider the Season

Nail polish color should change with the season. Hot pink, lime green or baby blue may look beautiful in spring and summer, but a bit overdone in winter. More subtle nail polish colors such as light pink, white or deep colors such as plum work well in winter.

Consider the Occasion

The occasion plays a role in choosing a nail polish color, also. Pastels or neutrals often work well for work or daytime, while playful colors may be too harsh. Save the more daring colors for a night on the town or fun in the sun. Pastels or mid-tones work well for formal occasions such as a wedding. Bold and trendy colors don't usually work well for formal occasions.

Your Skin Tone

Just as you choose foundation to compliment your skin tone, you should choose the color of nail polish to compliment your skin tone. Blue-based colors work well on fair skin tone and yellow-based colors work well on darker skin tones.

Decide if you are wanting to simply add a bit of color and shine or if you want a burst of color. The decision can be made from the mood you are in, the outfit you will be wearing, the season and the occasion. Nail polish comes in many varieties including matte, glitter and metallic sheen. If your nails have imperfections, a matte will be more favorable.

Many cosmetic departments have samples of nail polish you can test. This is a good way to see what nail polish color looks good on you before buying.

Nail polish can be a flattering fashion accessory and an expression of your personality. With the bounty of colors available, you're sure to find a winner!
