Controlling the Side Effects of Prostate Cancer with Saw Palmetto Berries: An Alternative Treatment

Saw Palmetto palm tree which grows in the southeastern part of the United States is the basis for this alternative prostate cancer treatment. Specifically the berries which grow on the Saw Palmetto palm tree are used for the treatment. These berries are dried and ground into a powder, then administered in capsule form or mixed in a tea. This alternative treatment is used to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostates containing cancerous cells. It can also be used for enlarged prostates which are not cancerous.

This alternative prostate cancer treatment has been used by Native Americans for centuries as a remedy for urinary and genital problems. This treatment will not cure prostate cancer; however, it will help control the cancer's side effects. Cancerous cells cause inflammation due to high BPH (prostatic hyperplasia) within the prostate. The side effects of high BPH are frequent urination and inability to urinate. Saw Palmetto berries reduce the severity of these problems without causing impotence, which is a common concern for men.

Prostate concer often results in pain for the patient, along with swelling of the prostate. Saw Palmetto berries alleviate the pain, as it removes bladder obstructions to improve urinary flow. Additionally, it relieves DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which absorbs male hormones which sometimes lead to cancerous prostate cells.

Studies by some of the leading researchers in alternative cancer treatments have shown significant relief of symptoms associated with prostate cancer and high BPH when this alternative cancer treatment is used. These studies have also shown Saw Palmetto berries will not cure prostate cancer; however it is primarily used to control side effects. 

As with all traditional and alternative prostate cancer treatments there are side effects. Side effects associated with the use of Saw Palmetto berries includes: headaches, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, and heart pain. If any of these side effects become severe, the use of Saw Palmetto berries should be stopped immediately.
