Applying Self Tan. Keep skin healthy and youthful with this guide to safe self-tanning to suit your skin type and colouring. For a realistic, natural-looking finish, it's better to do two layers of a pale self-tan than one layer of a dark tan.

Skin Types and Preparing for Self-Tan Applications

PALE SKIN - look good in tinted moisturisers or self-tanners for fair skins. Colourless or light lotions look more subdued than dark creams - or use a facial self-tanner on your body for a subtle effect.

DRY SKINS - should wash with a pH-balanced cleanser, and spray skin with a hydrating spritzer or massage in a lightweight, water-based body moisturiser before applying a self-tanning cream.

OILY SKINS - should choose oil-free self-tanners to avoid skin breakouts. Opt for light sprays, gels, lotions and mousses and avoid heavy creams, which often contain pore-clogging ingredients.

SENSITIVE SKINS - can react to DHA - the chemical in self-tanner that creates a fake tan. Look for "mahakanni" on the label instead - a natural herbal ingredient that does the same job.

Do's And Dont's With Self Tanning

DO exfoliate and moisturise before self-tanning for a more even finish.

DON'T miss anything out - the backs of your knees and neck need colour too.

DO go easy on areas that soak up self-tan like your elbows, ankles and toes.

DON'T forget to wash your hands or you'll end up with orange palms.

DO get a salon tan if you lack the confidence to tan at home.

DON'T use perfume shortly after applying self-tan as it causes patchiness.

Sun Safety SPF

When you're walking around in the sun, then you need to protect your skin.

Sunscreens are rated according to their sun protection factor (SPF), which signifies protection against potentially burning UVB rays. The SPF you need depends on how long it usually takes your skin to burn.

Once, applied, you need to top up regularly.

SKIN TYPE  - TIME IT TAKES TO BURN  - SPF

Pale, freckled  - Immediately - 35+

Pale - 10-15 minutes - 25+

Pale to normal - 20-30 minutes - 15+

Olive - 45 minutes - 8-15+

Asian  - 1 hour - 6-12+

African - 1 hour 30 minutes - 4-8+
