Being a vegetarian doesn't mean you have to eat tofu and beans everyday once you learn which products are the best vegetarian meat substitutes.

The best vegetarian meat substitutes are those that mimic meat products, are full of flavor and protein and are also low in fat and calories.  Some of the best vegetarian meat substitutes are made from wheat gluten which is full of protein while others are made from the nutritious soy protein.  While tofu and bean should also be a staple of any vegetarian pantry, manufactured vegetarian meat substitutes are always a good way to add something special to a meal.

One excellent vegetarian meat substitute is Italian flavored meatless sausage.  These types of meatless sausage are not of the typical breakfast variety and are instead intended for a main meal.  The Italian flavored meatless sausage is large enough to be sliced or spliut in half and is packed with spices and flavor.  This vegetarian meat substitute is perfect when mixed with fried peppers and onions just like the classic version of sausage and peppers.

Another superb vegetarian meat substitute is the ground "beef".  While there are many versions of the ground meatless meat that comes in the form of a crumble, the best vegetarian meat substitute of the variety is the one that comes in a tube similar to classic breakfast sausage meat.  The tube of ground soy protein is sticky and has a doughy consistency which makes it ideal for vegetarian meatballs and loafs.  The vegeraian meat substitute also fries up into a crumble if that is the consistency desired.

Both of these vegetarian meat substitues are the perfect options for beginners or for those looking to replace some of the meat in their diets.  Vegetarian meat substitutes are healthy alternatives and are good for the animals and environment as well.  The best vegetarian meat substitutes are always the ones that work more like an ingredient, and the vegetarian meat substitutesmentioned here are ideal replacements for any recipe calling for meat.

I am a longtime vegetarian and love being one. Thank goodness we have FAR more options these days than nearly 20 years ago when I first became one. Great article. : )
