Twitter now has over 8 million users and is increasing at the rate of 1300 per cent per month. These figures alone prove that this site is a must have in your traffic generation and promotional arsenal.

This article is about ways to maximise your returns from Twitter, generating traffic you could not possibly imagine to your pages and make some decent money in the process.

I will cover a win win systematic approach for you so that you can follow a proven roadmap to success with Twitter and do not worry, you will not lose your account, be doing anything blackhat or illegal.

Everything that I discuss here will be allowed on Twitter and not in contradiction of the terms of service.

What Is Twitter

Twitter is a platform where members can send a message to other Twitter members. The message is reduced to 140 characters only and will allow url's to form part of the message.

Joining Twitter is simple. It's not an affiliate site and it is free. Go to Twitter.com and open an account.

For those marketers out there wishing to join, your Twitter user name should contain the keywords of your marketing efforts.

At Twitter you have Followers and those that you Follow.

The idea being that when you send a message that all of your Followers has the potential to see it. Also you can respond to messages to build up the social networking side of Twitter.

You will find on Twitter many useless messages, known as Tweets, such as "just got out of bed" or "I'm hungry I am going to get lunch".

Other Tweets might be from a topline marketer such as "Looking for product testers for my new product {url}".

Tweets that I favour are ones like, "I just updated my Hubpage at {url}" or "come see my new blog post at {url}".

These Tweets let you know what is happening in the world like the recent bushfires in Victoria Australia or the Presidential election etc.. Tweets really do give you the news first or introduce you to information that you might not have been introduced to.

Show Me The Money From Twitter

Where's the money in Twitter you might ask? Well there are several avenues that you can make money from using Twitter.

As you can imagine with 8 million users on Twitter and you Tweet a post about your latest blog post or launched a new webpage, then the chances are someone on Twitter will visit the url on your Tweet.

If you have a site serving advertisements, there is a good chance someone from Twitter will click for further information. My experience is they do sign up for newsletters or free e-books and are very active on the site.

Twitter users are targeted visitors as they read your Tweet, sparking their interest, and they visit your site. Stumble Upon visitors are different in so far as they are just rotating through sites and stop on ones that interest them.

That's one way to make money from Twitter, getting traffic to your site that convert well especially if you have a call to action on your page.

Now I want to introduce you to something I am sure you have not heard of that pays directly into your Paypal account.

Your Twitter Profile Page

When you join Twitter you have a profile page. This is where you complete your bio details as well as an area to show your site url or http address.

A well written bio directing visitors to the above url on your profile is a marvellous way to get traffic. I use this and have found some great results. I just tweaked my bio until I found something that worked.

Ok that's your profile page but when you look at it there is a background. This background is one large advertising billboard that you yourself can make promoting your efforts or just have fluffy dogs and cats as your background.

But, and here's the big BUT, you can sell that space. That's right, you can sell your background to an advertiser who will pay you on an hourly basis just to have THEIR background advertising their products.

The site to enter into this program is Twittad.

When you join Twittad you complete your profile and then Place Your Profile in the directory so advertisers can find you and accept your terms to advertise on your background.

When you complete your profile you can nominate how much you will charge to rent your background for seven days, fifteen days, one month or three months.

For each hour your profile page has an advertisers background, you will earn money that is paid directly into your Paypal account.

Getting Followers

No matter how you look at Twitter, you need to have followers. There are several ways you can do this. One is you can join for free a membership site dedicated to Twitter that has all the videos and pdf training you could possibly want.

To join and learn more for free about Twitter then I recommend More Than Members founded by Allen Jeeson and Jill Carpenter, both big names in the marketing world.

The most proven technique that I have used to date has been Tweeter Getter. I have been fortunate enough to be following high profile marketing Twitter members who have used this system. That means I am getting massive exposure to those high profile marketers Followers at a steady pace.

Do not worry about this. The pace is steady and does not raise any flags as if you went out and Followed thirty people in five minutes. Tweeter Getter is a slow viral process.

Other way to get Followers is to search under Twitter in the "Find People" tab. This is where you can search for marketers, crafts, doctors and any other keyword or niche site. The search will return like minded people and you can then follow them.

Hopefully when you follow someone, they return the favour, which is often good Twitter ettiquette.

Putting It All Together

There you have it. These are some ways that you can make money from Twitter.

Join Twitter, update your profile, join Twittad, enter your user name at Tweeter Getter and become involved in Twitter. be a good member responding to other members tweets and when you tweet, make it interesting and not too spammy.

If you own a website or a blog then you must put in the Tweet This widget at the bottom of each post. You can see this in action on my blog and I must say, it has increased my daily traffic exponentially, that is, a lot.

What we have achieved in these few short tips is to get a following that will enevitably lead to large amounts of traffic to your sites.

As your Followers grow so does the potential for you to lease out your background to advertisers. One advertising sale to your profile page can mean a nice few dollars in your pocket or pay for your hosting accounts.
