Choosing The Right Keywords

What Is A Keyword? - Good question I am glad you asked. Or more importantly I'm glad you dropped by to see what my latest offering is for keyword selection.

Basically, a keyword is something on the internet that someone will search for to find information.

The best I can think of, is a person suffering diabetes. That person will search for - diabetes. Secondly, someone may want to buy a camera or i-phone and will search on a search engine using that term.

That's a keyword.

One word is a keyword and several words are known as a long tail keyword phrase. Such as, see thru the lens Canon camera.  No its not scary, keyword phrase.

It simply means if I am looking for dog training, I will search for - Kelpie Cross Female Dog Training Techniques.

See, that's a long tail keyword phrase.

How To Choose A Keyword

When you are looking for a subject to write on, you are actually looking at writing about a keyword.

If you want to write about iphones and the popularity of owning one, then you can, but, your keyword is still iphones.

Now as you can guess, everyone is writing about iphones and your writings will unlikely reach the top pages of a search engine. Too much competiton for such a single term.

The trick is to use a long tail keyword phrase such as iphone battery charges or iphone black leather covers.

The point here is, one word to get your content on a search engine is way too hard. Several words are easier.

Why - simple - ask yourself - when you search on a search engine do you write one word or several - you write more than one word to narrow your search down so you won't waste time looking for the information you want.

So to choose the right keyword, decide on your subject, come up with a phrase and write about that phrase.

How Important Is A Keyword

All depends on what you want. If you want to make money with advertisements on your site such as Kontera or Adsense, then you want a good keyword.

A good keyword is a keyword where other site owners such as large companies want your business and they will pay for it.

Lets take the example of Insurance. There are many companies who want their site seen to gain business. When you have a group of companies all trying to get you to see their site, then they will bid against each other to have their site on top in advertisements.

Any search engine on the right hand side or very top of the listings, will have a sponsor section. It is that section companies will bid against each other to be on top.

What this means for you, is that a good keyword, such as insurance, will return a higher amount when a visitor clicks on the advertisement.

There is money in the keyword "Insurance" and limited money in "Dogs". So, choosing the right keyword is important if you want to make money from advertisements.

Now the same applies for your own writing on a subject. If you want people to see your page then you have to target a keyword no one else has thought of. You will be the only page there.

Let's think about this for one moment. When the internet first started there was only one site for each keyword. One dog site, one insurance site, one helicopter site etc..

Limited competition will get your site seen and the harder the keyword competiton, the more money you will make, but the harder to be seen.

Keyword Positioning

This is my favorite part. If you have a keyword phrase and someone else is in position 1 of the search engine, then you have to beat them to get lots and lots of traffic.

There are several easy ways to do this and this is where you "target" your keyword phrase.

Insurance dot com will always be on top for insurance as the keyword is in the url. Search engines love that. So for this exercise we will forget insurance - for now.

If you have a keyword phrase, search on a search engine for it. If the top ten positions have that phrase in the url then move on. If they do not - bingo.

With your keyword phrase, place it in quotes and search - "keyword phrase" - and see how many sites are competing against you. If its less then 200,000 - that's right - two hundred thousand and they do not have the keyword phrase in the url - then you will reach page one. Remember - search engines love that.

The simple rule of thumb is - keyword phrase in url - less then two hundred thousand competing websites - returns good money per click - and receives high rate of visitor queries each month.

If number one has 150 inbound links then you will need 160 inbound iinks. If the site in position one has 150 links made up of 50 page rank 3 and 100 page rank zero, then you need the same or more or higher page rank inbound links.

What Is The Right Keyword

I cannot tell you that. I simply do not know.

What I do know is that if you keep trying, write about what you think is popular, minimal competition, use your keyword phrase in your title (url), then you will succeed.

To search for a keyword phrase use Adwords or Spyfu to find out how much each click on a keyword targeted advertisement will return to you.

At the moment I have a keyword that receives over 150 clicks per day, its only three cents to sixty cents a click, but it all adds up.

Think about keyword phrases, I chose swimwear swimsuits women dot com and wrote about swim wear. The keyword ranges from ten cents a click to one dollar sixty.

Problem is there is twenty two million sites competing against me. So what I did was write a post on sheer transparent swimwear and bingo.

Long tail keyword phrase that has limited competition in a highly sort of market but a breakdown of the keyword - sheer transparent swimwear - became a winner.

Thats my point. Think outside the square. Think about your keyword and if you were searching for it - what would you write in the search engine. That is your keyword right there.

Choose the right keyword that gets a lot of search engine queries and returns a high competition in advertisers - means more money for you - then you will succeed. I welcome any comments, thumbs up or anything else as this is what it is all about.

Write a page and get links - get visitors who comment or buy or whatever.

Write a page and hope it becomes successful.

Through trial and error, one day, your ship WILL come in.
