Firstly I have to say there is no such thing as a computer that can give you a tan. This advertisement was a marketing ploy created by a British based skin cancer charity called Skcin to help raise awareness of the dangers of sun beds. They created a website called computertan.com just for this purpose.
When you visit the site you are asked to click on a button to begin your free tan trial. Once you've clicked on the button a full-screen image of UV lamps appear and they even light up for a few seconds as they would if they were real lamps. But after a few moments these lamps disappear and a message comes on the screen saying 'Don't be fooled, UV rays can kill'. This message is then followed by graphic pictures of the skin cancers caused by UV damage.
The website and the advertisement have been a huge success and have received over 1 million hits in one month. Skcin have achieved their aim of bringing greater awareness of the dangers of over exposure to the sun and to sun beds.
The advert was created in memory of Karen Clifford a Nottingham woman who died in 2005 after a long battle with cancer.
