A few quick tips can save time and energy

To an individual who enjoys the challenges of home repair, nothing is more frustrating than a disorganized mess in a garage workshop. Just about everyone has their moments of slovenly attitude, but from an overall perspective of productivity a well organized workshop is a true thing of beauty. Even those among us who love working with our hands can become quickly disgruntled and lose focus when the prospect of preparing for work requires more effort than the work itself. Time lost searching for a specific tool, avoiding hazards that could and should be eliminated, and dancing around items stored in a workshop that do not belong there all detract from the focus of the project at hand. An organized workshop saves time and effort, affording the opportunity to address other important aspects of life while leaving time for relaxation.

A good place to start in organizing a garage workshop is with the floor, believe it or not. Nothing is quite as dangerous as trip hazards in a workshop, and a floor that is clear of obstructions not only increases personal safety, but allows for more usable work space. Begin by removing anything that is not at home in a workshop - storage boxes, bicycles, etc., and anything that can be stored or stacked neatly against walls should be moved to a better location. If stacking items make certain that they have no chance of falling onto power tools like table saws or drill presses. Even the distraction caused by a falling item can lead to a serious accident if you are using a power tool - this is an important step.

The next step in organizing a garage workshop is to group tools in accordance with their use. Woodworking tools, metalworking tools, electrical tools, and painting equipment to name a few, should be separated and stored in designated location within your garage workshop. While some tools may be used in several different categories, use your best judgment in storing them with their most popular use. Tools can be stored in separate tool boxes for ease of movement, and tools that are exclusively used in the garage workshop can be easily stored on an inexpensive pegboard.

The final steps in organizing a garage workshop are to ensure that proper safety equipment like goggles, earplugs, and gloves are available at all times. Likewise a small first aid kit should be present in every garage workshop, as minor injuries are common in regard to performing any type of manual labor. A very good idea is that every time you work in your garage workshop, set aside 5 minutes to clean your work area before leaving.
