A look at why adult education is on the rise in many areas, as people have to retrain in order to get better or different jobs.

Adult education used to be something that only a very select few people ever considered, and generally speaking once someone had finished school in their youth, they didn't go back. However more recently, an increasing number of people are returning to education, and people are more free to change career paths as and when they wish.

Changes in the law in various areas means that often employees who might have been doing a job for years don't have the required qualifications that a new employee would have to attain. For example many people who work in offices are now required to have a business or economics degree of some kind. This often means that employers have to send their employees on various courses in order to attain recognized accredited qualifications in their particular field.

Some people see this as unnecessary, as often the person will know everything the course has to offer, but it does have a number of uses. For example if the person then chooses to start with another company in the same job, they will have to have a qualification as proof that they can do the job. Also often over the years there are new aspect of a particular field that someone who has worked in the job might not have found out about.

Similarly changes in health and safety laws often mean that employees who are qualified in a particular skill have to be retrained every few years. For example forklift drivers used to be able to drive without any certificate or testing. More recently however it has been made law that everyone driving a forklift had to have a special license, which they were all then tested on. This might seem pointless for someone who had been driving one for their entire working life, although it does ensure that everyone can drive a forklift to a suitable standard.

Because careers today are a lot more transitory than they ever used to be, having a wide range of skills and qualifications to draw from is beneficial when attaining different jobs. In the past many people would have had their job either for their whole life, or would have been able to find similar work in the same field. Today however the world is moving a lot faster, and jobs that were once plentiful are now either scarce or gone altogether.

Increasingly, many jobs are now asking for all their prospective employees to have a degree of one kind or another, where before they didn't require anything more than a G.E.D. This is the employers way of making sure that they get competent people with relevant skills to the job, which tends to mean that they will also be better at the job. For the employees, having a degree of some kind means that the amount of jobs that they can go for is increased greatly, as is the amount of money they can expect to earn.

There is now a lot more support for adults looking to attain their school level qualifications than there every used to be, as well as basic skills such as reading and writing effectively. In the past these would often be viewed a something that someone should have learned in school, and there was little dispensation for those wanting to learn later in life. However now there are a multitude of programs, many of which are free aiming to get every adult to a reasonable level of education. This in itself means that many more adults are going into further education after good experiences with gaining their basic skills.

Since the original conception and increasing use of online degrees and various other qualifications, many people are finding that they now have the time to become more educated. While in the past many educational institutions would require a full time commitment, which many working adults could not make. Many different educational programs are now available either online, or during flexible hours so that most people should have enough time to attend them.

Immigrants entering the country are also more upwardly mobile than they ever used to be, and as a result are seeking education a lot more often. Immigrants in years past would mainly tend to stay in poorly paid jobs, and wouldn't tend to be able to better themselves due to cost and inherent discrimination.

However today due to increases in fair employment laws, as well as different laws regarding immigrants becoming citizens, adult education is on the rise in this area. Many immigrants also tend to have to get more qualifications because employers tend not to value foreign qualifications as much.
