If you like mangoes and have seen the huge seeds inside, you probably have wondered if they would grow if you plant them. Yes, you can, Mangoes are quick and easy to germinate, you can use the seeds to grow a beautiful tree.

Many people throw out their mango sees, but these large seeds can become beutiful trees, or even nice house plants.  Mangoes like warm humid temperatures and grow best in the Southern United States through Central America and into South America.  Many of the mangoes you buy probably come from South America; if you live in the right climate, plant some trees and give them a little time perhaps you can get mangos from your yard.

Mangos are not really difficult to sprout and some preparation helps them come along.  Most likely the seed will take about a month or more to sprout.  I will breifly explain the best way I found of sprouting an mango seed in rich soil.

Preparing the Mango Seed

Let the mango seed dry out a bit, it so that it will not be slippery, what you actually get out of the mango is a large husk, the seed is inside that.  Once the husk you may try to extract the seed to help it germinate, however this step is probably not necesary.  If you choose to extract the seed, you will need something to cut the tough husk and probably a good pair of needle-nose pliers to to pry the husk apart.  When doing this take care not to dameage the seed or injure yourself, the husks are pretty tough.

Planting The Mango Seed

Mango seeds are pretty easy to sprout at this point, if you wish to sprout them indoors you can put them in a wet paper towel and keep it moist, If it is warm enought outside you can put them directly in some good potting or gardening soil.  You can plant the seed on its side or on its edge with the rounded side up.  if it is planted the wrong way, they will change course after they sprout.

To help speed things up you may also soak the seed for a couple of days, then plant it in some potting soil. It is important to keep the soil moist.  Eventually the seed will sprout, grow roots and start a plant.  These young trees will grow pertty quickly and the plant can easily get to be over a foot in a few months.

Once your mango tree has begun to grow, you can use it as a house plant or plant it outdoors. If conditions are right after several years you may be able to harvest fresh mangoes from your new mango tree.
