Dry Eyes Hurt!

It seems that there is no cure but you can get some relief from dry eyes. There are some short term remedies and drugs to make your eyes feel much better. If you have chronic dry eye syndrome, the first thing you will want to do is talk to your doctor to make sure it is a eye and vision disorder and not an autoimmune condition. Many men and women over 40 experience dry eyes, and especially women during menopause. It can also sometimes happen during pregnancy. It's sometimes caused by the physical and hormonal changes we go through.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Drinking water
  • Water in the air source like a humidifier or fountain.
  • Warm wet washcloth
  • Teabags
  • Artificial tears
  • Eye mask
  • fish oil omega 3

Step1 Alaskan King Crab! To get some relief from dry eyes, the doctor may recommend you add fish to your diet which are rich in omega 3 fats, or take omega 3 supplements. Two recommended fish are salmon and cod. Crab meat is good also.

Step2 Refrain from rubbing your eyes as it irritates them and makes your condition worse. To help spread the moisture you do have in your eyes, you can blink purposely and quickly.

Step3 Humidity helps! In your home you might try a humidifier. I have found a fountain in the living room was nice to look at and keeps moisture in the air.

Step4 Alcoholic Beverages Drinking alcoholic beverages has a tendency to dehydrate your body. It is important to drink extra water with an alcoholic beverage to lessen the effects. If you love to drink then learn to love water also.

Step5 If you need instant relief from aching eyes, try wetting a washcloth with warm, not hot, water and place it over your eyes and nose and breath in the moisture as it also will penetrate the eyelids. Change it to another warm one when it cools.

Step6 Many adults also use tea bags placed in warm water, squeezed fairly dry and lay down with them over the eyes.

Step7 If you are traveling, carry over the counter eyedrops labeled "artificial tears".

Step8 If eye dryness persists, there is a drug on the market which helps. Talk with your doctor about prescription medication such as eyedrops or other drugs used to control dry eye syndrome.

Tips

  • Do not use any contact water to moisten your eyes as it contains chemicals which may further irritate your delicate eye membranes.
  • Long hours in front of the computer can strain your eyes. Resting in a dark room with a warm cloth or eye mask will help relieve the discomfort.
  • Do not use drops for redness or itchy eyes as they may only irritate your already painful condition.
  • Do not use any vegetable slices as they may drip juice and sting your eyes.
