Looking for a job? Interested in the environment? Start your own business as an eco-consultant. Eco-consultants educate others about the steps crucial to make a shift towards a greener lifestyle. It's an exciting and important new field. There are many new jobs available in this new Green Economy, like energy/water conservation, toxic free living, energy efficient lighting, insulation, carbon offsets, etc. This article will teach you the steps to becoming an eco-consultant.

Things you’ll need

Desire to be green

Interested in helping others to be green

An understanding of new green technologies

Step 1

First you must decide if this is the right field of employment for you. Are you interested in green products, renewable energy, electrical efficiency, carbon offsets, and recycling? If you answered yes to any of these, you can be an eco-consultant. There are many new green technologies and eco-friendly projects; you will be overwhelmed by the number of people asking you questions. As an independent contractor, you will help shift people's homes and /or businesses into a brighter shade of green. The eco-consultant provides practical advice on how to green their lives. If this is for you, go to Step 2.

Step 2

Next you will need to conduct research on the green projects in your area. Gain as much knowledge as you can. I suggest you look for those shovel ready projects which are be promoted by the new 2009 stimulus package. You will need to know all about the new trends in eco-friendly business practices, familiarize your self with the people and business in your area. Learn about renewable energies. Look for training courses. Research, research, research! You need to know more about these subjects than anyone else. You will know by now if this is the career for you.

Step 3

Apply for employment for an eco-friendly firm or start your own eco-consulting business. Because you have a low amount of start-up costs, you will be able to build your business. Your purpose now is to bridge the gap between the mounting interest in going green and the lack of knowledge of how to get there. Many times, consumers are overwhelmed by the volume of eco-conscious changes to learn about and need to be made for both their homes and businesses. This large number of people would benefit greatly from the simple eco-friendly consultation and plan of direction from you, an eco-consultant.

Step 4

Finally, the goals of an eco-consultant plan should include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Reducing the environmental impact of the home and office spaces
  • Recycling centers for every home and office
  • Creating better indoor air quality
  • Conserving resources, reducing waste and monitoring ongoing environmental performance (reduce, re-use)
  • Understanding the benefits of shifting to more sustainable and green living
  • Education on cleaning products
  • Toxic chemical and product removal
  • Education on conscious living
  • Electromagnetic testing of the appliances and wiring in your home
  • Education on solar and wind options available
