A Short breed bio and useful links about the Basset Hound.

The Basset Hound is a french breed with short legs and a short coat. They were originally bred to hunt in brush and were popular with the poor people of france after the French Revolution. They are scent hunters and can hunt in large packs or alone. They were recognized by AKC in 1885 and by UKC in 1928. They stand under 14 inches at the shoulder They make for good family dogs, and are generally good with kids. They can be slightly stubborn and need to be taught the rules of living with you. They weigh about 50 pounds. They should never be overfed so they have less risk of developing spinal and joint issues. They do okay in city life but, should be allowed play time outside. They live to about 12 years of age. They are known for large litter sizes of an average of 8 pups per litter. They are relatively easy keepers and need little grooming. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. It was introduced into England in the late 1800s. They also descend from early Bloodhounds. They are a relatively easy going dog and shouldn't be to aggresive or to shy.
