Tourists Encouraged To Kill Crocodiles

In Australia we have so many wonderful, amazing animals, but some people are not willing to give great predators, such as crocodiles and sharks the respect they deserve. Instead Australia ministers are planning to introduce 'crocodile safaris' where tourists will be able to kill these national icons.

Not satisfied by killing millions of kangaroos and other so called ‘pest’ animals every year, many Australian ministers are now in favour of the idea of more ‘crocodile safaris’. These ’safaris’ are actually killing sprees, in which tourists could pay to shoot and kill crocodiles.

This action comes after an 11 year old girl was killed by a crocodile in the Northern Territory. Numbers of crocs are estimated to be above 80,000, the highest ever in Australia. Is it just me, or does that number really not seem that high? This is a native animal we are talking about here and they are more powerful than us. It is nature! Don’t let your kids play around where the crocs live for Gods sake! You wouldn’t catch me anywhere near croc infested waters, but that doesn’t mean I want them to be killed.

As well as powerful predators, crocodiles are caring mothers and sensitive lovers. They relate more closely to dinosaurs than to other reptiles. In fact scientists do not think crocodiles have changed much at all since prehistoric times. Surely we should work to preserve this ancient species, rather than kill them. Crocodiles are an important and fascinating part of our environment. I can only imagine what the late Steve Irwin would think if he heard the news that crocodile safaris could be reintroduced, after being banned in 2005.

As sad as it is when someone is taken by one of our big predators (crocs and sharks) it is because we are in their natural habitat. Let’s not kill off another Australian icon. Let’s give these animals the respect they deserve.
