A short bio on the American Water Spaniel, and useful links for this breed.

The American Water Spaniel was developed in and near central Wisconsin. The first American Water Spaniel was registered in UKC in 1920, it was then recognized by UKC in the Gun Dog group. They were recognized inĀ  AKC under the Sporting Dog group. They are still strong hunters today and it is a relatively small breed of dog. The primary color is liver or chocolate, yellow eyes are a disqualifing factor in show. They live about 13 years, and have about 5 puppies. They are a sensitive breed so when training it is best to be motivational rather then discpline oriented. They stand about 16 inches at the shoulders, and are about 30 pounds adult weight. Some American Water Spaniels drool, and they love to roam, so a fenced yard is recommended. They need brushed weekly and excersize or a long play session outside daily. These dogs can flush birds, retrieve, and tree squirrels. They are recognized by more popular registries. Their main event still is hunting. They also like obeidence, fly ball, and agility. They usually make a good family pet. There are only about 3,000 in exsistance, making it a harder to find breed. If you are looking for Am. Water Spaniel puppies, considering their rarity, you may have to be on a waiting list at a breeder. Always consider adoption from a breed organization first if considering a pet.
