How to Analyse Poetry

Poems can mean different things for different readers and here I have listed in numbers how a person can understand and analyze one. This article will definitely help those readers of poetry who might not tend to understand what they read. Of course, some our poets on Triond are quite talented.

1) Reading the poem once will not do any good. This is why it is important to read it a good few multiple times because then the words of the poem will speak to you in your mind. You will find that the understanding of the poem comes to you directly.

2)  The title of the poem is very important. This is what engages the reader to read the poem. Before reading a poem, make sure you know what the title introduces to you about the poem you will be reading. Titles are the introduction to what poems will be about. For example I have written a poem called ‘What I Should Have Known Five Years Back’. Obviously, the poem’s title says that the poem will be about something I should have known five years ago, not something totally off topic like ‘What I know in This World’. Make sure that when you read a poem, look at the title first as this will let you know what it is about.

3)  Stay calm if there is a word that you do not understand. Read the poem first, and then look at the synonyms of the word by typing it into Microsoft soft. Afterwards, re-read the poem with the meanings of the word, if it makes it easier, use a word you find in the synonyms listed on Microsoft word.

4)  Read the poem loudly. Do not whisper or read it in your mind because it won’t enter you directly. By reading aloud, it makes it easier for you to understand. I find this quite silly at first, but soon you overcome it by continuously reading loudly.

5)  A lot of poems use punctuation to help guiding the reader along. Many people stop after each line but this isn’t where the sentence ends. You need to continue reading which will keep it smooth while on the other hand, it will become broken if read with breaks.
