Frogs consist of more than 5,000 species described and they are among the most diverse groups
of vertebrates. However, populations of certain frog species are declining significantly. Of the thousand
species of frogs, here are the most bizarre and oddest-looking.
Crucifix Toad or Holy Cross Frog (Notaden bennettii)
The Crucifix Toad or Holy Cross Frog of Australia is probably one of the freakiest and weirdest looking
creatures on Earth. The Crucifix Toad is one of the most distinctive species of frog. It exhibits many bright
colors and a very round frog. Its nose is blunt, and legs and feet are small. As this species is fossorial, the
tympanum is hidden. Males reach a length of 6.3 cm or 2.5 in and females a length of 6.8 cm or2.7 in.
Turtle Frog (Myobatrachus gouldii)
![]()
This weird and odd-looking creature is called Turtle Frog, a species of frog found in Australia. This
incredible frog like the Crucifix Toad is a fossorial or burrowing species, and probably the most fossorial
of all Australian frogs. They even call and mate underground, where the eggs are laid in the moist sand
and develop directly into frogs.
Suriname Toad (Pipa pipa)
![]()
Because of its weird physical appearance, the Suriname Toad appears to be a dead creature. Other
common name of this species includes Aparo, Rana Comun De Celdillas, Rana Tablacha, Sapo Chinelo,
Sapo Chola, and Sapo De Celdas.

It is a species found in South America and lives in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests,
subtropical or tropical swamps, swamps, freshwater marshes, and intermittent freshwater marches.
It is also threatened by habitat loss.
Long-nosed Horned Frog (Megophrys nasuta)
![]()
This odd-looking frog is the Long-nosed Horned Frog. It is also commonly called Malayan Horned Frog,
a species of frog restricted to the rainforest areas of southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia to
Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo.
Cruziohyla calcarifer
![]()
This amphibian is one of the most unique frogs due to its several distinctive traits that include having
two colors in the eye, unusual but beautiful coloration and peculiar arm and leg structures. The range
of Cruziohyla calcarifer extends through Central America into northern South America.
Heterixalus alboguttatus

This frog with distinct coloration is endemic to Madagascar and scientifically named Heterixalus
alboguttatus. It is a species of frog that inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical
or tropical moist shrubland, subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, swamps,
freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marches, arable land, heavily degraded former forest, ponds,
irrigated land, and seasonally flooded agricultural land.
Waxy Monkey Leaf Frog (Phyllomedusa sauvagii)

This frog is unique in many ways. This brightly colored species of frog is commonly known as the
Waxy Monkey Leaf Frog, a hylid frog found in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. It moves by walking
rather than hopping, which is the reason for the "monkey" in its name. It is a very calm, careful
creatures. It has adapted to meet the demands of life in the trees. It does not need to return to the ground
during the mating season, rather it lays its eggs down the middle of a leaf before folding the leaf, sandwiching
the eggs inside. Its nest is attached to a branch suspended over a stream so that hatching tadpoles drop
Argentine Horned Frog (Ceratophrys ornata)
![]()
The Argentine Horned Frog most prominent feature is its mouth, which accounts for roughly half of the
animal's overall size. It is also commonly known as the Argentine Wide-mouthed Frog or Pacman Frog.
It is found from the rain forests of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Like the African Bullfrog, it is also a voracious
eater and will attempt to swallow anything that moves close to its wide mouth even if it would lead to suffocation.

The lifespan of this species is 6 to 7 years; however they can live up to 10 years. This creature as a
pet is usually the hardiest species and is easy to care for.
Ishikawa's Frog (Odorrana ishikawae)

This peculiar species of frog is native to Japan. It is commonly called Ishikawa's Frog, a species
in the Ranidae family. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, rivers, and intermittent rivers. It is
threatened by habitat loss like many other species.
African Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus)

This bizarre and large species of frog weighing over 2 kg commonly called African Bullfrog is also
known as the Pixie Frog due to its Latin name. It is found in many countries of Africa and lives on
dry savanna, moist savanna, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, intermittent freshwater lakes,
intermittent freshwater marshes, arable land, pastureland, and canals and ditches.

This creature is carnivorous and voracious feeding on insects, small rodents, birds, reptiles and
other amphibians. This frog is also aggressive like the Budgett's Frog and has been known to bite.
The African Bullfrog is an exotic pet in many countries around the world, mostly in Germany, and
owning it is not prohibited by any laws. In this species the male is bigger than the female.
Argus Reed Frog or African Reed Frog (Hyperolius argus)

The two frogs on the photo above are females. The Argus Reed Frog or African Reed Frog is one of
only five species of frogs in which males and females do not share the same coloring. Males are
usually green colored, and Females usually Reddish with bright little spots.

The photo above is a male. This species is highly variable in color and pattern. They live in low bushes and
grasses in the wild. They show their best coloring at day time under the sun
Pouched Frog (Assa darlingtoni)
![]()
Simply looking at it, there is nothing unusual with a Pouched Frog, a small, terrestrial frog found in
rainforests in mountain areas of Australia. One unique trait of this frog is the "pocket" on its hip where
the frog's tadpoles travel to after hatching. A skin fold is also present on either side of the frog running
from its eye to its hip. The eye is gold with brown flecks and when the pupil is constricted it is horizontal.
Ranita De Cristal (Cochranella albomaculata)
![]()
This frog is absolutely weird. One can literally see its internal organs because it's transparent. This frog
species known as Ranita De Cristal is found in Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama. Its natural
habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist mountains and rivers.

Solomon Island leaf Frog (Ceratobatrachus guentheri)

This frog is unique not only of its notably long snout and horns but also unusual because it does not go
through a tadpole stage in its maturation. Instead small frogs hatch directly from the eggs which are laid
in damp depressions in the ground. The Solomon Island Leaf Frog lives in tropical lowland rainforests on
the Solomon Islands and in Papua New Guinea.
Purple Frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis)
![]()
Purple Frog or Pignose Frog is endemic to Western Ghats in India. This creature is one of the
oddest-looking of all frogs.
Budgett's Frogs (Lepidobatrachus laevis)

This freaky looking creature is one of the most popular exotic pets among amphibian collectors.
A Budgett's Frogs is highly intelligent but aggressive creatures and make a good pet when isolated.
The two sharp protrusions in their mouth allow them to attack both prey and predator alike. This frog
is also known as the "Freddy Kruger" frog, because when frightened, it will open its disproportionately
large mouth and emit a shrill scream.
Although the Budgett's Frog and Purple Frog are included in my article entitled World's Most Unique and Weirdest
Aqualand Animals. I included them here for those who were not able to see it. If you wish to see additional weird
