Animal Profile: Mexican Beaded Lizard

This article will teach you about the Mexican Beaded Lizard.

Scientific Name:
Heloderma Horridum

Description:
Male Mexican Beaded Lizards get to be around 38 inches and they weigh around 5-6 pounds. Female Mexican Beaded Lizards get to be around 30 inches and they weigh around 3 1/2. Mexican Beaded Lizards get their name from their scales which look like little beads. Mexican Beaded Lizards have short fat tails and they store fat in them. Mexican Beaded Lizard's color is black and they have big blotches which are usually yellow or white. Mexican Beaded Lizards have black forked tongues which they stick out often like snakes. Mexican Beaded Lizards are one of the two (the other is the Gila Monster) only venomous lizards in the world.

Location:
Mexican Beaded Lizards are found in parts of Mexico. Their ideal habitats are places such as pine forests.

Behaviors:

Mexican Beaded Lizards spend most of their day inside their burrows. Mexican Beaded Lizards use their venom more for defensive purposes. Male Mexican Beaded Lizards search for female Mexican Beaded Lizards during breeding season. The female Mexican Beaded Lizard abandons her eggs after she lays them and she lets the babies fend for themselves.

Diet:
Mexican Beaded Lizards are carnivores. Mexican Beaded Lizards feed mostly on eggs from reptiles and birds but they do occasionally eat small mammels, herps, and birds.

Population:

Mexican Beaded Lizards are a threatened species.
