The eardrum or tympanic membrane is a thin membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear. Its function is to transmit sound from the air to the ossicles inside the middle ear. Rupture of the eardrum can lead to hearing loss.
How can the eardrum get perforated? Cleaning deep into the ears with Q-tip can puncture the eardrum, also infection, loud noise or getting slapped on the ear are common causes of a hole in the eardrum. Surprisingly perforated eardrum may go unnoticed since there is no definite pain associated with it until the symptoms of hearing loss present themselves. The perforation may heal naturally within a month, or few months. However many perforations require intervention or surgery. The ruptured eardrum is usually discovered when patients complain of hearing loss. Small perforations may cause only a slight hearing loss that is barely noticeable to the patient. Patients with perforated eardrum may have often ear infections.
