The Problems with Online Shopping
A look at the possible pitfalls inherent to online shopping as opposed to shopping in stores, and how they can be looked out for and overcome.
Online shopping is fast becoming the preferred method of shopping for an increasing number of people. However as well as the obvious advantages to doing this, there are some downsides and pitfalls as well. Knowing what these pitfalls are and how to avoid them is essential in ensuring that your online shopping experience remains easy and productive.
One of the main problems with online shopping is that you cannot get a good look at a product before buying it, and the pictures offered often don't give enough detail. Similarly if there is some kind of problem with the product then you aren't going to find out about it until you actually receive it, by which point it is too late to do anything about it on the day. Similarly if you are buying things such as groceries, you can't select which pieces of fruit or cans of beans that you want, and you might end up with something that you aren't happy with. The fact that you can't always see what else s available or on offer is also a problem.
If you do get something which you aren't happy with, then getting the problem sorted out can take a lot longer than it does if you buy something in a store. In the real world, then taking something faulty back to a store and getting a replacement is as simple as a trip to the store. However if you need to send something back that you bought online, then it usually means sending the goods back, and then waiting for the site to send you another replacement. This process will often take several weeks with online shopping, which is annoying if the fault is the sites fault, such as sending you the wrong item.
If you are using one of the many auction sites that allow you to buy through an individual rather than a company, then there are a number of things to look out for before bidding. If someone has a lot of bad feedback, then it usually means that they aren't that trustworthy, particularly if the comments suggest that this is the case. Many people will not use any kind of seller unless they have a perfect record in this respect, although making sure that they have nearly all good feedback is usually sufficient.
Similarly the fact that someone is an individual rather than a retail company means that they aren't always going to be legitimate. If something is said to be coming from a distant country, and is very cheap, then these types of things are often a scam also, as the goods simply wont arrive. The reason that people put the location as a foreign country is in order give them more time to rip more people off before they start to get bad feedback. At this point they simply make a new account and abandon the old one.
Something to be wary of with both auction and general retail sites is what the cost of shipping is going to be. Thousands of people forget to check what the additional cost of shipping the items that they have bought will be, as this information is often displayed separately. This means that something which might seem like a bargain can often end up being lot more expensive, particularly if the item is large or heavy. If you aren't careful then the cost of shipping for some items can actually offset the savings that you might have made on the item against buying it in a store.
Small items such as CDs or DVDs often have a flat shipping rate for a single item, which is usually at least a few dollars. However many of them offer lower rates when buying more than one item at a time. This means that often buying a single item from a site can actually be just as expensive as buying it in a store because of the high postage costs. However when you buy a few items, than the postage rates per item usually go down, and savings can be made.
If you are buying from a foreign site, then the fact that different currencies might be used can be a lot more expensive than they first appear, or in fact a lot cheaper. Many bank accounts will charge you for converting money into different currencies, as will some sites. This often means that there can be hidden charges when dealing with different currencies, which again can make online shopping more expensive than it first appears to be.
The other major problem is that because the internet is completely unregulated, there are millions of scams out there, and many people fall for them all the time. These can be anything from popups to identity theft scams and even fraudulent companies. A good general rule to follow is only to buy from sites that you know are definitely legitimate, and that other people you know have used. This way you can avoid all the sites which might not be genuine, and will also a void giving your information out to a large number of sites also.
