Your guide to the essentials of owning a rat or mouse.
When faced with choices as to what pet to keep, the rat is almost never mentioned, which is a shame, because they can be a very good starter set for kids and a good trainer pet for adults.
If you decide to get a mouse for a pet, make sure that the following are close by:
1. Learning Materials
Try as many things as possible about the pet you’re buying. Remember that the success and failure of your pet’s life depends on how much you know about them and how to care for them. Go online or go to your local libraries to find out more about them.
2. Cage
You can’t simply let a pet rat lie anywhere. They need cages or houses to protect them against bigger pets. Don’t forget to make it a clean environment for it and that they have the right size.
3. Food and Treats
You should provide meals that provide rats a balanced diet. Rat pellets can be purchased at your local pet store or online.
They also appreciate treats like fruit and vegetables or plain popcorn. Just remember to keep this in check as too much can lead to obesity.
4. Toys
If you have some unused pipes lying around, or toilet paper tubes, they can be a good source or fun and enjoyment for your pets.
5. A Good Vet
It’s always good to have a veterinarian ready to assist you in case of emergencies. Have a contact number ready for such situations.
