The Fate of Democracy

Is democracy retreating worldwide? The recent events in Venezuela and Pakistan demand collective actions from the world power to save democracy.

Democracy is the best way to give people the ultimate freedom. A government of people, for people and from people, as said by Abraham Lincoln, can be possible only in democracy. However, Democracy is again in danger after defeating all totalitarian forces with the collapse of communism in 1990. More often we are hearing the news of something absurd as a military coup and left wing extremism. Added to this is the continuing threat posed by terrorists.
Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez has recently changed the constitution which will allow him to serve (RULE) his country for unlimited terms. The terms were limited prior to this so called referendum. Chavez would have to vacate his seat of immoral power in 2012.
The world leaders need to seriously ponder over this as this may have ripple effects as we have seen what happened with the Latin America. In India, the ultra left insurgent has more or less power full influence in 165 districts which is more than 25% of the country. Strangely, according to the Prime Minister of India, not the terrorism but left led insurgency is the biggest internal security problem for India.

What should be done to make democracy worldwide phenomena?

The Bush style of pressuring country for democracy will not work. Democracy needs stability and tranquility. The need of the hour is to change the structure of global system. We saw the status of United Nations in all these years. It is ineffective where it is needed most. When Sharia is imposed on the Swat Valley of Pakistan, there is no opposition other than flimsy.
