About Garth Brooks

Troyal Garth Brooks was born on the 7th of February,1967 and is among the most loved and critically acclaimed country music artists of past few decades. His 1st album titled after himself released in 1989 and made him a house-hold name by breaking in at the #2 position in the U.S Country album chart.

Since then there has been no looking back at this versatile singer cum song-writer who has enthralled millions worldwide with his brilliant country songs. The fact that he is second only to the Beatles in terms of number of albums sold is a testimony to his genius.

Garth Brooks retired from singing in 2001 after a career spanning nearly two decades in which he sold millions of copies worldwide and enthralled millions more including me.

About the Album

I've been a huge fan of Garth since the time my father first introduced me to his songs and I've literally grown up listening to his songs. I bought this album in the summer of 2008 from Amazon.com for about $18.

The album comprises of 34 songs contained in a two disc set along with a DVD which basically contains the music videos of all the songs listed in the album. After listening to the album, I was transported back in time and remembered the good old days when I used to listen to Garth songs along with my dad. It's no wonder that this album was an instant hit and as far as I can recall it reached the #1 position in almost all the charts.

Now I won't be reviewing all the songs from the album because I don't think anyone will have the patience to read this entire review(lol), hence, I'll be reviewing some of my favorite songs from the album and will try to bring out the emotions I felt while listening to these songs.

The Songs:

More than a Memory

Well, this is currently my favorite track from the album. Basically a song about spurned love, this one talks about a man's attraction and want for a girl who has left him. A little slow but extremely beautiful song.

My rating - 10/10

If Tomorrow never comes

This song is from his album The Hits and one of his most popular and loved songs. I loved the video of this song which talks about a man's thought of his loved ones if he were to die the next day. The solo guitar piece in the beginning is simply out of this world.

My rating - 9.5/10

To Make you Feel My Love

Originally a Bob Dylan songs, this one s another of my favorite Garth Brook songs. A real soulful songs, this one left me feeling really touched for along time. It was also featured in the soundtrack of the 1998 movie, Hope floats.

My rating - 9.5/10

That Summer

Even though my fiance and me disagree on this one, I really do like this songs which tells the story of a young boy who remembers his summer spent with a lonely widowed woman. This one sort of reminded me of the movie Summer of 1942.

My rating - 9/10

What She's doing Now

Simply loved this song. A typical country song which talks of a man and his former lover. Really loved the beats of this one.

My rating - 9/10

In Another's Eyes

Another beautiful song, this one is essentially a duet with Trisha Yearwood(another of my favorite singers). Beautiful romantic number, this one makes me all soft and mushy(lol)

My rating - 8/10

Shameless

This one was originally sung by Billy Joel and later by Garth Brooks who sort of transformed the rock style of the song into a country mix music. Brilliant nonetheless

My rating - 8/10

We Shall be Free

A little less popular song, I like this one for the social messages that it conveys. It talks basically of freedom of speech and issues like racism. I wouldn't call it preaching, rather that this one imagines a world free of all evils.

My rating - 7.5/10

Papa Loved Mama

Now this one's a true country song and I would love hearing this one at times when I felt a little lonely. The video of this song is a little bizarre but the song itself makes up for everything.

My rating - 8/10

The River

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. A mix of both pop and country music, the lyrics of this song are simply out of this world. Very soulful, this one inspires the write in me.

My rating - 9/10

Final Talking Points

Well, I've covered 10 songs from the Ultimate Hits album which I like the most. I do understand that most of you might and will not agree with my choice and I respect that. However, this one is my opinion and my understanding of the songs from that album. You can feel free to contact me for information on other songs from that album and I'll do my best to help you out.

Till then, listen to one of the best country music albums of all times and I will end by quoting these words from one of his songs

"I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination if I never try
So I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry"
