A sound card is a computer expansion card that allows audio input and output under the control of a computer program. The typical use of sound cards is provided through a program that acts as a mixer, multimedia applications sound audio component and can be managed.

These applications encompass multimedia composition and editing video or audio, multimedia presentations and entertainment (video games).

Characteristics

A typical sound card incorporates a sound chip which contains the digital-analog converter, that fulfills the important function of "reading" digitally recorded or generated waveforms from an analog signal and vice versa.

This signal is sent to a connector (headphone) where you can connect any other device such as an amplifier, speaker, etc. In order to record and play audio at the same time with the sound card it should have the full duplex feature for the two converters to work independently.

The most advanced designs are more of a sound chip, and have the ability to separate between the synthesized sounds (the generation of music and special effects in real time using a small amount of information and may support MIDI) and digital sound reproduction.

This is accomplished with DACs (Digital-Analog-Converter), which have the ability to play multiple digital samples to different tones and even apply real-time effects like filtering or distortion. In some cases, the digital reproduction of multi-channels can be used to synthesize music if combined with instruments.

Another way to synthesize music in the PC is via the "audio codecs" which are programs designed for this purpose but time consuming. Most sound cards also have an input connector or "Line In" for which you can enter any audio signal from another device such as microphones and others. The sound card can digitize these waves and save them in the computer's hard disk.
