Tarot Secrets Revealed: The Major Arcana.

Mar 16th, 2009 by Richard Field

The Major Arcana is a 22 card section of the Tarot Deck, and is steeped in mystery. This article explains why we need the Major Arcana in the realm of Divination.

As the Minor Arcana Cards in a Tarot deck represent Earthly events and concerns, The Major Arcana depicts Spiritual events and concerns.

In essence, The Major Arcana Cards-or Trumps-show the Spiritual stepping stones that we need to experience in order to become more spiritually aware and functional.  Each card in this section shows an action or event that leads as a catalyst towards a greater spiritual understanding of why that action or event has happened.

It is by experiencing all of the lessons depicted in the Major Arcana that a person can fully develop true spiritual awareness.

The order of the Major Arcana is as follows:

0  The Fool

1  The Magician

2  The High Priestess

3  The Empress

4  The Emperor

5 The Heirophant

6  The Lovers

7  The Chariot

8  Strength

9  The Hermit

10  The Wheel of Fortune

11  Justice

12  The Hanged Man

13  Death

14  Temperance

15   The Devil

16  The Tower

17  The Star

18  The Moon

19  The Sun

20  Judgement

21  The World

For an example: The Devil portrays the enslavement of Man. A man made desire to follow the ways of the flesh, and also materialistic and Carnal obsession.  This cards shows Mankind at it's lowest animal level, before intelligence and spiritual awareness.  Usually Tarot cards show man as Adam and Eve chained to the Devil.  The lesson here is to free oneself from that enslavement. To realise that We are Spiritual beings involves being trapped in Earthly desires and distractions and raising ourselves up from that basic animalistic existence. This card shows the true nature of spiritual awareness.

On practical levels, this card can show an addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, etc.  It is when we are existing on this basic level that this card can offer a way out-but only if You realise that You are trapped in the first place.

Some Tarot Readers tend to use only the Major Arcana to conduct Readings, but I feel that the Minor arcana and the Major Arcana complement each other to an high degree.

The Minor Arcana shows the day to day earthly events, while the Major Arcana depicts the Spiritual lessons learned as a result of these events.
