Examples of several famous simile poems. Explanation of simile poems.

Famous simile poems are all around us and easy to find if you just know how to recognize them. In order to recognize them, it's imperative to understand what a simile is. A simile is a phrase in which two seemingly unrelated things are said to be like one another. So, "Your teeth are like the sparkling stars above," would be an example of a simile. "Your eyes are to me as glare is to water," would be another good example of a smile. A famous simile poem is nothing more than a poem written by a famous writer that is made up of simile phrases.

Here are some examples of famous simile poems:

  1. "A Red, Red Rose," by Robert Burns
  2. "Flint," by Christina Rossetti
  3. "Mending Wall," by Robert Frost
  4. "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
  5. "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Eliot
  6. "As Good as Gold,"  (Christmas Carol) by Charles Dickens
  7. "Death Lies on Her Like An Untimely Frost," (Romeo And Juliet) William Shakespear
  8. "The Sound and the Fury," by William Faulkner
  9. "Men and Women," by Robert Browning
  10. "A Simile," by Matthew Prior

It should be fairly easy to find print copies of these famous simile poems on the internet or at  your local library. Once you have studied them, perhaps you can start working on writing some simile poems of your own. You might be surprised to learn that it is not as difficult as you originally thought. Perhaps 50 years from now your simile poem will appear in an article about famous simile poems. Go for it!
