Steve Hutchinson already misses Matt Birk. Nevertheless he doesn't envy his companion's verdict to abscond Minnesota and billboard with Baltimore.

It's the venture region of the NFL, of course, one that Hutchinson himself experienced to the fullest with his own departure from Seattle three days ago. And as the Vikings' new union rep, Hutchinson is more familiar to that edge of the tough than ever.

The all-pro left defend is replacing security Darren Sharper, now a boundless agent, as the lineup's main declare regarding NFL Players Association issues.

Hutchinson was scheduled to be in Hawaii this weekend for the election of the union's next executive. He's been busy studying the four candidates, including two former players and two lawyers, in enhance of the fortune to consider direct arguments from each one before the radical vote that's set for Sunday.

This is an important time for the NFLPA, with alarming collective bargaining talks with the owners. Benefits for retired players have come to the vanguard as a big release, and there's rank-and-sandpaper proof for a NBA-form salary slotting logic for rookies to keep those first-rotund signing bonuses from continuing to swell.

Nevertheless the recent slump has exacerbated the uncertainty of impending revenue streams for the league - particularly the colossal TV money - as, both sides train to wrangle for their share. Neither owners nor players will be disposed to be bullied around by the other.

"It's bigger than just signing bonuses and part of contacts and restructuring," Hutchinson said this week in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "There's a lot that's vacant to go into this verdict. There's a lot that's departure to be put on the shoulders of who is open to be the executive."

There will be a lot on Hutchinson's shoulders this spice, too.

Without Birk at centre, John Sullivan is slated to phase in as the starter in his minute year. Right tackle is also worried, leaving Hutchinson as the unquestioned boss of this rude line.

After five seasons with the Seahawks, he signed a seven-year commit appeal as much as US$49 million with Minnesota after Seattle located the transition tag in early 2006 and made him a restricted free agent. The Seahawks were cross, both with him and his new side after the Vikings inserted a poison-pill provision in his exchange that made it virtually impossible for them to match.

Hutchinson remembers that tumultuous month well. Three years later, he realized what Birk was free through when he chose to bequeath his hometown panel for a new opportunity away.

"When a player makes a certitude, it's not forever because of money or other influences," Hutchinson said. "The player is sometimes looked down leading because he made a business resolve, but it's always a two-way avenue and people forget about that. It was tough for me to see him go. There was no mystery he was one of my bordering links on the team. Nevertheless I hope him the best."

Minnesota played at Seattle that first spell after Hutchinson's switch. Baltimore is scheduled to break the Metrodome sometime this drop.

"It was very tricky for me when we went back," Hutchinson said. "I left on a little different provisos than Matt left on. It was pretty hostile for me there, but I think these people here in Minnesota certainly accept Matt and will do nothing but give him a genial pleasant."

For Birk, while, it's surely to be a novel benefit.

"He could probably get dressed and come out of the closet span blindfolded and march to the sideline," Hutchinson said. "It's available to be different for him, that's for surely."
