Turn your time watching TV into a fun and learning time for your children

Do you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that children two and under should avoid TV and other media altogether?

TV is one of the most powerful forces in shaping our children's lives. It is difficult to avoid , so let's make it more enjoyable and a learning experience for our children when they are watching it.

Plan Ahead

Pick out shows that are appropriate for the age of your children.

If it's properly planed, television can help children to understand the world around them, and encourage them to explore what they're watching with their questions.

Watch Together

This is a good time to cuddle and bonding with your children.

Allow the TV themes to shape the conversation by asking and answering questions that come up. This is a great time to also teach your children family beliefs and values.

Get a Related Book on the Subject

If it is possible, find a book to read more about the subject you've watched, or planning an outing for the family to experience!

Set Limits

Limit the hours of watching TV! Reading, singing, dancing, playing board games, and creating art can keep your children entertain for hours.

Backyard is also a good place to explore new things.

Alarming Statistics:

  • American Youth spends 900 hours in school per year
  • Number of minutes parents spend talking to their children per week: 39
  • American Youth is watching an average of 1,500 hours of television per year.
  • Number of minutes per week that a child watches television is 1,680

Icy, you are so right. We spent many hours cuddling in front of the tv and that way I controlled what was being viewed and was available for questions. We must also spend time in other activities with our children.

definitely agree - its great cuddling time, specially first thing in the morning or towards the end of the day - as long as you talk through what’s happening can be very productive time!

Icy, you deserve mother of the year. You always come up with excellent well researched articles about child rearing.  It is sad how little time parents actually communicate with their children and how many actually rely on the television or games to keep children occupied rather than spending one on one time with them. I always try to make an effort to spend time with my many grand children because I feel that it is so important to help instill self worth and values.
