Rank high in Google maps local results

Mar 15th, 2009 by 6string827

It's no real trick to be among the top local results on Google maps. This is something that every business with a physical store address needs to do for themselves. It's simple, easy and above all else, free.

It is simpler than it sounds to get a high ranking at Google maps and be sen in the local results! The trick is to start thinking local and stop thinking global.

This is basic stuff here, folks, not college type stuff. When a visitor searches Google maps for information, your business will be near the top. You need to ask yourself "how do I get MY business on top?" Well, I am glad you asked that, cuz the answer is here!

First, understand that results in Google maps are shown in a very distinct order. First are the Google Adsense PPC (Pay Per Click) ads.Second are the Google map local results. Third are all the natural, or "organic" SEO results. The main idea here is to combine all three and command the whole monky pile!

NOTE: The local results are shown in order from the center of town outward. So the closer you are to the center of your town, the higher you will be in the LOCAL results by default.

You will need a Google account. Go log into it, then look for the button that says "add new listing". Now you create your listing with your business name, address, phone number and any other pertinent information. When you click the "Add your listing" button, Google verifies your identity with a phonew call or a postcard.

Just because you're listed doesn't mean that you'll be on top automatically. To do this, a little old fashioned optimization is needed. What this means is if your business is listed on other sites using the same keywords and such, this creates what is called "relativity" and nets you a higher ranking  in ALL the search engines.

As a safeguard, you may want to open an Adsense PPC account, too. This is the third leg of the combination and CAN result in you being on top of ALL THREE RESULTS; PPC, Google Maps local results and generic "organic" results (this is why listing on OTHER sites is important).

The most clicked on ads on a results page are the top 3 to 5.
Remember, the Internet operates on relativity. The more relevant a keyword is in relation to your business, the more visible, or relevant, it is. The more relevant your key words are to your business, the more visibility you will receive.

Asking for reviews from gogle Maos customers will help get the word out. You can help yourself even more by having as many articles and web page content associated with your site out there as is possible. More related keywords = more traffic = more business. Pretty simple, huh?

So you want to use a combination 1-2-3 punch in your campaign. After you are listed, you need to:
1. Use Google Adsense PPC to grab the top PPC postiion.
2. List your business on Google maps. NOTE: The top three slots in Google Maps results are closest to the center of town. Location does matter…
3. List your business on the other search engines, too. This builds relativity and gets you up to the top position of every search for your key words/phrases.

Along with the other comments, this being over a year old, the information is also a little out of date. The “center of town outward” reference may have been valid a while ago, but not any more. I am six miles from the center of Fort Worth Texas and am number 2 for my keyword search.

You encourage people to cheat. How can you get listed closer to the midtown if you don’t have a business location there? Because of articles like this people list fake addresses and multiple locations. We’ll never keep maps clean if people follow your recommendations. Everything can be fabricated, including ratings, but you can’t fabricate great work ethics, customer support and great craftsmanship!
