Tips for Attending The Worlds Longest Yard Sale (aka Hwy 127 Sale)
Some great tips if you are planning on attending the Worlds Longest Yardsale (aka Hwy 127 Sale).
The Worlds Longest Yard Sale is always held on the first thursday in August lasting for four days ending on the following Sunday. Also known as The Hwy 127 Corridor Sale it is 654 miles in length and runs through five states starting in Gadsden, Alabama
and ending in West Unity, Ohio.
This is the king of all yard sales. I have been to this sale three times already and planning on going year after year. Below area some tips I've learned from my experience that may be helpful to others planning on going to The Worlds Longest Yard Sale.
First you will need to figure out where you would like to start at on the yard sale route. You can start at either end of the sale or in the middle. There is not an admission fee. Some folks stay within a 50 mile span of the yard sale route and others start out at one end and go as far as they can get.
Once your starting point is figured out you will need to figure out where you will be lodging at for the night. Try figuring out how many hours per day you would like to shop and how many hours of driving you will do to get to that next sale. This will give you an idea of how far along the yard sale route you will get and what area you will be around to search for lodging. You will need to reserve early for hotels and motels since they book up fast. Campgrounds and state parks are scattered along the sale route too. They would most likely be your best bet for lodging.
When preparing to bring things for the yard sale trip be sure to bring a lot of small bills as with any yard sale.
When packing things to eat and drink make sure to pack lots of ice, bottled water or other drinks and ready to eat snacks. The weather is usually pretty hot in this area in August and places to eat can be few and far between. Keep your gas tank filled as well since you never know where the next gas station will be.
Also bathrooms can be a rare find in some areas along the route so be sure to pack a roll of toilet paper for those uh oh moments and make use of bathrooms when you do see them.
Fanny Packs may seem outdated and dorky looking but you'll wish you had one for this yard sale. Lugging around a purse can cause quite a painful shoulder.
The sales you will find are scattered here and there and some are large like flea markets. Good fitting shoes are a plus to have as well as sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Having a dependable vehicle is a must as you will be making lots of stops, sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, and driving for long periods in very hot weather.
If you plan on purchasing any large items bring your truck, suv or a truck with a trailer hitched to it. At times the traffic along the route can get quite heavy and the parking can be sparse making it difficult to manoeuvre an RV or a truck with a trailer attached.
5You don't want to just throw all of your great finds into the back of your car and risk something getting broke. Pack bubble wrap and newspaper to keep fragile items from getting broken, and boxes to keep things organized.
The yard sale route runs along small scenic rural country towns and at times there will be some larger towns along the route that have hotels, restaurants and gas stations.
Plan well and have a blast finding unique items and great bargains.
