The on-going drug war in Mexico has reached an alarming stage prompting US President Obama to consider deployment of the National Guards to contain violence that have caused the death of 5,000 people last year including 200 Americans.

Short of considering military action on the escalating drug war in the US-Mexican border, President Barrack Obama yesterday announced that he was looking at the possibility of deploying the National Guard to contain violence in the border.

‘We are going to examine whether and if National Guard deployments would make sense and under what circumstances they would make sense’ Obama said during an interview with journalists for the regional papers, azcentral.com reports

The US Mexican border has become the hot spot of war among drug syndicates in Mexico and neighboring countries. This year alone, more than a thousand people were killed in various encounters between and among drug cartels and Mexican authorities. Last year, more that 5,000 people were killed in various drug related incidents.

The escalating drug war has created some political reaction from officials in nearby El Paso and neighboring areas. Texas Governor Rick Perry even called for the deployment of 1,000 troops to protect the border. But Obama said ‘We’ve got a very big border with Mexico. I’m not interested in militarizing the border’.

These developments have prompted Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-California, to schedule a hearing on Mexican border violence on Thursday.

‘Last week, Mexico sent an additional 3,200 soldiers to the border’. Sanchez said in a prepared opening statement for the hearing ‘increasing the total number of Mexican soldiers combating drug cartel to more than 45,000.’

The border drug war has cause the death of over 200 Americans.
