Relationships - When You Hear " Let's Just Be Friends"

In the context of a sexual relationship, "Let's be friends" are fighting words, at least for the partner who's still hanging on.  Whether one is male or female, how positively or negatively this "finish line" is seen often depends on whether you're on the initiating or the receiving end.

In fact, "Let's be friends" is the generic escape clause that usually shows up at the end of a difficult relationship, when getting out is the primary objective of one member of the twoome and hanging on is the primary objective of the other.  It's a last-ditch attempt to swim for freedom without capsizing the boat.

Most women see the parting salvo "Let's be friends" as no more than a high-end version of that other time-honored but meaningless escape code, "I'll call you."

Now I ask, "What about you."  Do you feel judged as not good enough for a love relationship with him/her, but just fine as a drinking buddy or confidante about his/her ambition or his/her ambivalence about the new woman/man he or she is dating?  Will that friendship keep you from getting on with your life?
