Shiny, silky, natural hair can be gorgeous no matter the color. It is becoming increasingly popular to allow hair to be its natural color, avoiding the harmful effects of chemical dyes. Gray hair is healthier, more authentic, and saves time and money.

Many of us grew up with the conventional wisdom that we must do everything in our power to fight aging, including a monthly trip to the hairdresser to cover our graying roots. Today, many style-conscious women are choosing not to dye their graying hair, and as a result, receive many compliments on their silvery locks. Women have discovered that natural hair can be sexy, gorgeous, and sparkly. This is a wise choice because going natural is healthier, saves time and money, and looks simply beautiful.

1. Natural is Healthier

Did you know that a lot of nasty chemicals might well be in your hair dye, including lead, coal tar, ammonia, and mercury? These chemicals can be absorbed through your skin, and possibly cause you health problems. Bladder cancer, dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis and respiratory ailments have all been linked to the use of hair dye in various scientific studies.

What’s more, these chemicals are environmental pollutants as well. When you rinse your dye-infused hair in the sink, these toxic chemicals go down the drain and end up in our water supply. The containers find their way to a landfill and the chemicals will leach into the ground, affecting the ecosystem in a negative way.

Hair dye can have adverse effects on the health of your hair and scalp as well. It can cause your hair to become dry, rough, and brittle. This will result in hair that is unmanageable and lacking in luster. In severe cases, the hair can break off entirely. Some people have allergies to the dye, resulting in redness, sores, itching, and burning sensations.

2. Save Time and Money

Going to the salon for a dye job can be expensive and time consuming, yet the results obtained at home can be less than satisfactory. On top of that, you must buy special shampoo and hair care products in order to keep your dyed hair looking its best and to keep it from drying out. Dyed hair often takes more time to care for and style, due to its fragile nature. Natural hair can save you a lot of time and money.

3. Natural Hair is Beautiful

Whether your natural color is salt and pepper, sterling silver, sparkly white, or pewter, you can look fabulous, as nature intended. Graying hair is no longer seen as frumpy, and can look quite fashionable with some attention to style and your overall look. Dyed hair can often look fake, while gray hair will enhance the natural changes that occur in skin tone as you age. Many feel that gray hair gives a dignified and wise appearance. Gray hair says that you are confident enough to have an authentic look, and that you are comfortable with yourself as you are.

Here are some tips for making your graying hair look its best:

  • Make-up, especially a lustrous lip color, can brighten your look.
  • Get a stylish cut and keep it neat and trimmed at all times.
  • Use conditioner regularly to keep your hair looking shiny and soft.
  • Consider adding highlights if you are not happy with the shade of your hair. It will be less expensive and time-consuming than a complete change of color.
  • In order to avoid tarnishing your hair, use clear hair care products.

Healthy hair will always look better than unhealthy hair, no matter the color. Hair that is your natural color will look beautiful, be easy to maintain and care for, and avoid the health risks that dying entails. Natural is the better choice.
