Learn a non-messy, great smelling play dough recipe you can make at home for cheap.

Homemade play dough isn't just an economical and frugal solution or something to do with your kids on a rainy day, it's also something that many Moms prefer once they've made their own for the first time. While branded Play Doh is popular with the kids there are two problems:

  1. It's messy
  2. It's stinky

Homemade play dough doesn't get hard and stick to everything and if you follow this recipe it can actually smell pleasant. If you experiment and leave both the regular and the homemade kind out all night without sealing, you'll see in the morning that one is hard and the other is still soft and pliable.  Have you ever tried to get Play Doh out of your rug? Not pleasant! Many Moms swear the stuff off despite how much their kids love it.

The homemade stuff works great and smells great. Using Kool-Aid as a colourant gives the homemade dough a nice scent as it creates the colour. Here's a recipe for a homemade play dough that stays soft, works great, can be whipped up in a snap and that your kids will enjoy helping you with.

Homemade Play Dough

———————

1 cup of flour

1/2 cup of salt

1 pkg of Kool-Aid (any colour you like)

1 tablespoon Cream of Tartar powder (available in the spice section of your grocery store)

1 tbsp of Oil

1 cup of boiling water

Mix ingredients together in the order shown above and then stir and let cool before you let your child play with it.  Consider putting it in sealable containers. Baby food jars work great as you can see the colour and help it last longer as it would eventually go hard if left out indefinitely.

Kids love playing with moldable play dough so save some of your old baking supplies as you replace them with new ones to let them use as accessories.  Cookie cutters, chopsticks, mini rolling pins, potato mashers and other tools can help them make some fabulous creations!
