FREE CONSULTATION - Many attorneys will offer a free 1/2 consultation over the phone or in person. When you begin looking for an attorney ask for a free consultation. After you meet or speak with the attorney you will have a better idea whether or not they are a match for your case.
ASK QUESTIONS - Make a list of questions that are important for your case, including whether the attorney has had similar cases and what are the best and worst possible outcomes.
FEES - Make sure you ask detailed questions about what you will be charged for. Will you be charged for routine phone calls and copying charges? It is normal for attorneys to charge for the hours they put in and court costs. Many attorneys will have a set price depending on the area of law. If you have a strong case in a certain area of law your attorney may take your case on contingency. That means that you pay nothing upfront and they will take their fee out of your settlement. A normal contingency fee may be 40-50% of your settlement.
RETAINER - If you are required to give a retainer, make sure you ask the details of how it will be used, applied to your fees and returned to you if necessary. Ask what will happen to the retainer if you decide to change attorneys?
