With a falling economy, times are tough. People are looking to stretch their dollar in any way they can. When making your own laundry detergent, you can save yourself a lot of money.

The ingredients that you will need are Washing Soda, Borax, and Fels Naptha Soap. All of these items can be found in most local grocery stores, in the laundry aisle. You will also need a clean 5 gallon bucket.

The first step is to put 4 cups of water into a cooking pan. Heat water to almost boiling. Shave strips of the Fels Naptha Soap into the heated water. Make sure to keep your water under a boil. Continue to shave soap until you have used it all. Stir until soap is dissolved.   Pour three gallons of hot water into a clean, five gallon bucket. Mix the soapy water from the pan with the hot water in the bucket until the mixture is well stirred. Next pour in 1 cup washing soda. Stir. Add 1/2 cup Borax. Stir. 4 You can begin using your laundry detergent right away, however once the mixture sets for several hours, it will begin to gel. This is completely normal. Use 1 cup of laundry detergent for every full load of laundry. You can add a few drops of your favorite scented oil to enhance the fragrance of your laundry detergent.
