How to Eat Healthy At the Drive-Thru

Is eating out too often making you fat? It could be. Everyone has busy schedules. Sometimes the only time you get to see your children is when you're hurrying through the drive-thru line, scarfing down food on your way to a game, recital, or practice. But do you know how to make the smartest choices at the drive-thru?

1.  First, realize that anything with the skin still on it and fried is your #1 enemy. When you're choosing that crispy chicken sandwich, you probably think you're doing something great for your body, because chicken is healthier than red meat. At least you didn't order that big greasy cheeseburger, right?

You may be wrong.

Fried foods (like your crispy chicken) have basically a greasy, fatty coating around them. Choose a grilled chicken sandwich without skin.
If you're eating red meat, you should choose the leanest cut you can find.  But you can't pick what cut of meat is being served to you at the drive-thru.  So chicken seems to be your best choice, but it's only better than red meat if it's not fried.

2.  Salads are only a better choice if you go easy on that dressing! Some packets of dressing have over 400 calories! And if you have 2 packets of dressing, you might as well order that big cheeseburger you'd rather be eating, because it probably contains less calories!  Salad dressings that are oil based are healthier than creamy dressings.  Creamy dressings usually contain milk, which can be high in fat and/or calories.  Choose an Italian, Vinegarette, or other kind of salad dressing, and try to get it Low-Fat!  If you can't get it Low-Fat, then use it sparingly.

3.  French fries are nothing but empty carbs. They are not good sources of fiber, contain no whole grains, and are fried in grease. Eat sparingly! Better yet, go with a baked potato.  Not fried usually means better for you.
