Sister Act Movie - A Different Way to Look at It
This movie is not only about laughter. It also shows what happens in the real world, outside the convent, that needs help and attention. If you will notice, the church here is in the middle of a town plagued with bars, prostitution, gunmen, drug pushers, homeless people.
I cannot think of any more words to describe how much I enjoy this movie. I’ve watched it over a hundred times in different media types, from Betamax, VHS, VCD and now in DVD. When they show it on local tv or cable tv, I don’t miss watching any of my favorite scenes. My only rant about the DVD copy is that it only has 1 DVD unlike other movie packages which include 2 discs which has the “making of the movie”. I am very fond of watching behind the scenes, so I would appreciate it if they’d included it on the DVD.
I first watched it when I was 9 years old. The first scene was boring for me. There are lots of scenes that seemed boring for a 9 year old like me who doesn’t pay much attention to the conversation parts. What I used to look forward to were the singing parts, especially when Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg) start teaching the nuns how to sing (properly). As I grew older, I realized a lot about this movie that it’s not only about singing, fun and entertainment. From Deloris’ struggles in the convent, trying to keep the real person that she is, her cravings for the night life, being hidden inside like a bird in a cage. For an outgoing and outspoken like Deloris, I can really relate how terrible it was to be kept inside, not only from being herself but her whole life.
Because of her boredom in the convent, she started going out at night just to satisfy this need. She was not precautious about this thing, but was funny when the people from the bar (mostly men) were outraged seeing a nun inside the bar. Fortunately, Deloris was designated to take part in the church choir. I love how she took over the conductor and led the whole choir to what she believed is the right way of singing (being a singer herself and a dogged person). This is my favorite part when she turned the horrible choir into a most-wanted choir in their town, (which gained lots of fans from rockers to street children to the pope). I was very inspired how she turned the things upright from herself and to the convent. At first, the nuns were kept inside by mother superior but she started sharing the church to the locals, reaching out to the people, making the church interesting for people to go to.
I also like the friendships she made with the nuns, especially her two bestfriends whom she helped out to release their self-confidence. I learned that anything is possible if you have a dream and you have the confidence in yourself that you can achieve it. Because of the relationship she made with the nuns, she had deposited a great amount to their emotional bank that even they’ve found out that Deloris is not really the person they thought she was, they still helped her from the goons that were after her. So, in the end, they were able to put their show on, all for one and one for all.
This movie is not only about laughter. It also shows what happens in the real world, outside the convent, that needs help and attention. If you will notice, the church here is in the middle of a town plagued with bars, prostitution, gunmen, drug pushers, homeless people. It is a very good lesson for the people that no matter how small you are, who you are, where you’re from, you can make a difference by sticking together, helping one another in one particular goal and make things happen.

Amazingly I’ve never seen this movie. But I love anything with Whoopi Goldburg and comedy, especially classics, so I might rent from Netflix. Thanks for the fantastic review.
I liked this movie, too.
