Charity Organizations – Food For The Poor Strives To Meet Basic Human Needs

Dec 6th, 2010 by Sock Nye Tan

The existence of charity organizations is to help the less fortunate. Food For The Poor strives to meet basic human needs across the Caribbean countries and Latin America.

There are countless charity organizations around the world, big and small, but I was not aware or rather had not put further thought into how to choose a charity organization until I read Forbes’ special report of America’s 200 Largest Charity Organizations. I went through the list and Food for The Poor caught my attention. The pain of starving for food stabbed my heart.

Food for The Poor, Inc, a 501(c)(3) corporation, is the third largest international relief organization in the United States. It was established in 1982 working on a mission to help the many less fortunate across the 17 Caribbean countries and Latin America. Their goals are to improve health, economic, social and spiritual conditions of the men, women and children they serve.

Fundraising is the main source to provide direct relief assistance to the poor. Their direct relief assistance includes providing food for the starving, building small houses for the destitute, digging water wells for parched villagers, providing medicine and medical equipment for the sick and elderly, supporting orphanages and providing education for children. The list goes on…

What I like about Food for The Poor is that it strives to meet basic human needs. According to the statistics given by Food for The Poor, they have distributed more than 52, 000 tractor-trailer loads of aid to the poor and built more than 61, 000 housing units for families who had desperate need for shelter. In 2009, Food for The Poor received more $1.1 billion charity donations, from which 96% was used to help the poor. Their efficiency in making best use of donors’ contributions further strengthened my trust.

That is not all. The great work of Food for The Poor also won the recognition of many third parties. Food for The Poor received proudly four star and five star ratings from Charity Navigator and Ministry Watch respectively. It met the extensive standards of America’s most experience charity evaluator, the Better Business Bureau and was ranked #5 this year in the list of America’s 200 Largest Charity Organizations.

Poverty is a common parasite across the Caribbean countries and Latin America. Many of them are constantly in the battle of fulfilling basic needs. They need our help. Hear their desperate cries, spread your love. Donate now, right now!
